The Institute of Social Sciences and Humanities, Skopje (ISSHS)
The Institute of Social Sciences and Humanities, Skopje (ISSHS) is a nonprofit research organization in applied social and humanities studies focusing mainly on multi-issue policy studies. It holds the status of a scientific institution in the fields of social sciences and humanities accorded by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Macedonia (Decision nr. 30). It is also an accredited graduate school offering MA level programs in multi-issue policy studies, cultural studies and gender studies. The Institute holds an Erasmus+ charter of Higher Education Institutions in Europe. Its core activities consist in multi–issue policy studies and policy related advocacy and training, coupled with basic research in the social sciences and humanities. Making findings visible and putting them into function that can contribute to positive changes in society is attached to that of policy research: data driven advocacy and awareness raising are part of every policy research activity we undertake. We also provide consultancy and act as multi-issue policy studies think tank.

The post-pandemic era in Europe has accelerated the processes of its reconceptualization of the notions of democracy, inclusion, socio-economic development and of its most foundational values and principles along the lines of the so-called "twin transition," digital and green. Europe, not reducing it to the EU strictly, has put at the center of its effort of overall recovery a complete reinvention of the educational and research infrastructural and human potential as the main gear for economic and social sustainability and advancement. According to virtually all of the strategic documents of the EU marking the post-2020 era, the notions of democracy, social inclusion or economic wellbeing as well as the processes of EU integration of the accession countries, ought to be re-invented for the context of the "twin transition." Education and science (or innovation) are not mere aspects of said strategies but their crux. ISSHS is committing itself to engage in an in-depth analysis of these processes as an organic whole as well as in active advocacy and reshaping its educational program.
ISSHS' "triple A" moto (analysis, activism, academia) has been redefined along the lines of the processes described in this Update to the Commitment. Thus our triple A motto is appended by a triple D:
  • Democracy in line the European Twin Transition;
  • Digitalization of education, economy and governance;
  • Development through innovation and societal transformation.

Gender Studies
Gender studies are an interdisciplinary area in the fields of social sciences and humanities. Its interdisciplinarity mobilizes many approaches: psychological, philosophical, historical, sociological, cultural, communications and others. Gender studies seeks to understand, interpret and offer alternatives to the models of patriarchy and gender asymmetry. It is engaged in achieving bigger gender equality, rather than just a simple interpretation of gender relations. Our study program covers philosophy, sociology, cultural studies, political studies, psychoanalytic theory, poststructuralist theories of identity and semiotics, focusing on structuralism, Marxism and applied social research.

Policy Studies
Policy Studies is an interdisciplinary area that falls within the area of Social Sciences and Humanities. Its interdisciplinary nature simultaneously mobilizes approaches from various fields: Sociology with its cultural aspects, Political Economy, Law, International Relations Studies, Development Studies, Gender Studies, Philosophy and Social Psychology. What unites all the mentioned approaches, like all interdisciplinary areas, is the unique epistemological framework that is the basis of the justified study of the multilayer character of the problem that requires combining analytical approaches from several fields in the same area. Policy Studies is defined as applied social science, through which the empirical approach is an unavoidable element of methodological and substantive standpoint. The empirical approach on which these studies are based on is not reduced only to quantitative analysis and insights. Rather, the inventive and innovative solutions in the area of policy, it is necessary to interpret, among other things, the cultural preconditions and mechanisms of psychological internalization of social situations. This means that the application of qualitative research methods and discursive analysis is crucial for truly applicable analysis of the society and its policies

Public life
Skopje is the capital and the largest city of North Macedonia. The territory of Skopje has been inhabited since at least 4000 BC. According to the last official count from 2002, Skopje had a population of 428,988 inhabitants in its urban area and 506,926 in ten municipalities that form the city and, beside Skopje, include many other less urbanized and rural settlements some of which are located 20 kilometres away from the city itself or even border the neighbouring Kosovo. Skopje is located in the north of the country, in the centre of the Balkan peninsula, and halfway between Belgrade and Athens.
The city was built in the Skopje valley, oriented on a west–east axis, along the course of the Vardar river which flows into the Aegean sea. The valley is approximately 20 kilometres wide and it is limited by several mountain ranges to the North and South. These ranges limit the urban expansion of Skopje, which spreads along the Vardar and the Serava, a small river which comes from the North. In its administrative boundaries, the City of Skopje stretches for more than 33 kilometres but it is only 10 kilometres wide.Skopje is approximately 245 m above sea level and covers 571.46 km2.
Skopje has a borderline humid suptropical climate with a mean annual temperature of 13.5 °C. The summers are long, hot and relatively dry with low humidity. Skopje's average July high is 31 °C. In spring and autumn, the temperatures range from 15 to 24 °C . In winter, the day temperatures are roughly in the range from 5–10 °C , but at nights they often fall below 0 °C.
Skopje is home to the largest cultural institutions of the country. The city has several theatres and concert halls, and museums.Skopje is also host of many festivals during the year.
